How to Treat Nausea

Use ginger, one of the oldest remedies for nausea. Keep ginger ale, fresh ginger or ginger cookies on hand. Purchase ginger root capsules and take according to directions.
Settle your stomach by drinking warm liquids like broth or hot water with lemon before eating solid food. Nibble a few saltine crackers, and then add small quantities of bananas, apples, rice or toast.
Rub peppermint oil on your gums, or suck on a piece of peppermint candy. Make a tea from peppermint. Place the dried herbs in a tea ball or tea bag and seep in hot water for a few minutes. Spearmint and chamomile teas may help, too.
Experiment with scents that can calm your stomach and make you feel better, like peppermint oil or a freshly cut lemon.
Purchase sea-bands, which apply acupressure to the wrists to relieve nausea. If you don't have sea-bands, to achieve a similar effect use your thumb to apply firm pressure to the inside of your wrists.
Prevent future nausea. Follow a diet that includes fruit, vegetables and fiber-rich foods. Don't eat fried and processed foods. Find out what foods upset your stomach and stay away from them.
Start with small amounts of liquid, such as 4 to 8 ozs. at a time for adults and 1 oz. or less at a time for children.
Only use clear liquids like clear soup broth, juice or lemon-lime soda. A liquid is considered clear if you can read something looking through it.
Avoid milk and any dairy products, as they can make nausea and vomiting worse.
Children should be given oral rehydration solutions such as Pedialyte, Rehydrate, Resol and Rice-Lyte.
Children should avoid cola, tea, fruit juice and sports drinks, which will not correctly replace fluid or electrolytes lost from vomiting.
Adults should start by eating ice chips and clear, noncaffeinated, nondairy liquids such as Gatorade, ginger ale, fruit juices and other commercial drink mixes.

After 24 vomit-free, liquid-diet hours, adults can begin a soft, bland solid diet. Try to remember the BRAT diet: bananas, rice, applesauce (without sugar), toast (or pasta or potatoes).
You can more slowly work your way to soft foods with choices like gelatin, oatmeal and yogurt, but go back to liquids if the nausea and vomiting return.
