Predict WEATHER

Rain.
If the big dipper is pointing downward, where water can pour out it will rain.
If there are any number of stars in the halo of the moon, it will rain in that many days.
If a rooster crows at night, it will rain the next day.
If you hear a chorus of frogs singing, they are calling for rain.

Winter weather predictions.
Thick fur, cold winter.
Of course, we all know about the groundhog and his shadow. If he sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter.
If a cat sits with his/her back turned toward the fire, it is going to snow.
If animals develop an extra heavy winter coat, the winter will be bitterly cold.
An abundance of dog berries in the fall means a lot of snow the next winter.
~
Severe weather coming!
If birds feed and sing during rainy weather, it will rain for a long period of time.
If the birds stay in the trees, to wait it out, the rain will only last a short while.
If your bones hurt and ache, a storm is on it's way.
If your dog starts running around acting strange during a storm, beware, severe weather is coming.
~
Examine the clouds.
The clouds are one of the best indicators of rain. Clouds that are low in the early hours of the evening or that travel in opposite directions are both indicative of an upcoming storm.
~
Watch the animals.
Animal behavior can also keep you informed about when rain is coming. Loud birds and an increased amount of insects can let you know when it will rain.
~
Look at the sun.
If the sun is hazy, then that may mean that rain is on its way. A red sky at sunrise has also been connected to rainfall.
~
Pay attention to the fog.
Fog patterns can be used to predict the rain. Fog that comes from the land and lies close to the earth can be a rain indicator.
~
Rely on a barometer to predict rain.
This is typically the most accurate way that you can predict rain on your own. The barometer begins to drop when a storm is heading in your direction.
~
Look for wooly worms under rocks and inside hollow logs.
-Examine the wooly worm, paying attention to its bands of colors. The wooly worm will curl into a ball when touched or threatened. When they crawl, they can crawl very quickly!
-Wooly worm forecasters say that the size of the brown band of color will tell you what kind of winter is coming. Legend says that the thinner the brownish red bands, the harsher the winter will be. If the wooly worm is mostly brownish red in the middle, winter will be mild.
-Wooly worm enthusiasts claim an 85 percent success rate over the last few decades. Scientists tend to disagree and say wooly worm weather prediction is as unscientific as using groundhogs to predict winter weather. The groundhogs likely side with the wooly worms.
-Whether or not you believe in the power of wooly worms, they can be a fun project for children and adults.
