PLAYDOUGH

Non-Cook Play Dough
This recipe can be made by children. Make sure they know to mix it well.
1 1/4 cups flour
1/4 cup salt (4 tablespoons)
1/2 cup water
1-2 tablespoons flour (if needed)
food coloring

In a bowl, add 1 1/4 cups flour and salt. Mix. Add the water and some food coloring together. Mix. Place in the flour mixture. Mix together with a spoon (or your hands). If it is too sticky, add more flour. Store in covered container or a sealable plastic bag in the refrigerator.Note: This will not last as long as the cooked play dough.

Play Dough
1 cup flour
1/4 cup salt
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 cup hot water
A few drops of food coloring

In a non-stick pan, mix the dry ingredients. Slowly add the water and mix. Add food coloring. Mix. Cook over medium heat for about 3 minutes until it is in a clump; stirring constantly. Place on wax paper, the counter, or cutting board. Knead for a couple of minutes (let it cool if it needs to). Store in covered container or a sealable plastic bag in the refrigerator.

Play Dough
1 cup salt
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cups water
2 tablespoons oil
a few drops food coloring
Mix thoroughly and store in a plastic bag. Kids can pull, pound, and cut into shapes with cookie cutters. If left to dry will harden and can be painted. Non-toxic.
Tip: If kids dust their hands with flour before play the dough won't stick.

Peanut Butter Play-dough
This is FOOD and children must wash their hands before touching the dough and only touch the dough on their plates.
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup liquid honey
1 cup powdered milk
1 cup rolled oats.
In a large bowl, mix peanut butter, honey, and powdered milk together. Knead until smooth. (Add more powdered milk if you need to.) Mold dough into any shape you wish.

Nutty Butter Playdough
Provide children with various decorating materials, (raisins, chocolate chips, raspberry chips, butterscotch chips, shredded coconut, dried fruit, pretzels, smarties etc.)
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup white corn syrup
1 cup powdered sugar
3 cups powdered milk
In a large bowl, mix peanut butter, corn syrup, and powdered sugar together. Add powdered milk and knead until smooth. (Add more powdered milk if you need to.) Mold dough into any shape they wish.

Oatmeal Dough
1 cup Flour
2 cup Oatmeal
1 cup Water

Gradually add water to flour and oatmeal in bowl. Kneed until mixed (this dough is sticky, but unique in texture. Model as with clay. Additions: Add cornmeal in small quantity for texture, Add coffee grounds in small quantity for texture.
Frosting Dough1 Can Frosting Mix1 1/2 cups powdered sugar1 cup Peanut ButterMix all ingredients in bowl with spoon. Knead into workable dough. Model as with any dough.

No Fuss Play Dough
1 cup cold water
1 cup salt
2 teaspoons vegetable oil
2 cups flour
2 tablespoons cornstarch
Food coloring

In a large bowl, mix together water, salt, oil and a few drops of food coloring. Mix flour and cornstarch and add 1/2 cup at a time, stirring constantly (you may need a little more or a little less than 2 cups flour so make sure you stir in until it is the right consistency). Knead for a few minutes with flour on your hands.

Cooked Play Dough
3 cups flour
1 cup salt
6 teaspoons cream of tartar
3 cups water
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
Food coloring

Mix flour, salt, and cream of tartar in a large saucepan. Blend water and oil together in a bowl. Add to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens. Add several drops of food coloring until you get the right color. Cook for about five minutes. Take the play dough out of the saucepan and put it on a cutting board or counter and knead for a few minutes. Add flour if it's too sticky.
This play dough should last around three months if you keep it sealed in an airtight container or plastic Ziploc bag. It's so smooth and fun to play with when it's still warm.

Smelly Tip: For nice smelling play dough, add a few drops of vanilla extract, almond extract, or peppermint extract to any of these play dough recipes.



PAPER MACHE
As paper mache dries, it hardens over the mold you have made. You can make puppet heads, Christmas ornaments, piƱatas, dolls, dollhouses, boxes, sculptures or bowls. The final dried product can be painted, decoupaged or decorated however you please.
Make a form from wire, wadded newspaper, stuffed paper bags, or balloons. For a flat piece, such as a dollhouse or box, you can use a piece of cardboard. Tear newspaper into strips. Narrower strips work best for a rounded mold and larger strips are good for flat or rectangular shapes. Choose one of the following recipes to make the paste. Dip strips into paste, coating completely, squeezing out excess paste with your fingers. Use the strips to cover your pre-made form. If you overlap the strips, your finished product will look smoother. Allow each layer to dry before adding another layer. Cover your form with at least 2 layers.

Dryer Lint "Paper Mache"
3 cups dryer lin
t2/3 cup flour
2 cups water
Mix water and lint, slowly add flour, mix well. Cook over medium heat stirring constantly until mix holds together forming peaks. Pour out onto several layers of newspaper to cool. Use mix over a base such as a box, balloon or bottle, spreading mix like paper mache. Dry 4-5 days.

Paper Mache recipe
1/3 white glue
1/3 cup water
Newspaper

Mix glue and water. Tear newspaper into 1 by 4- to 6-inch strips. Brush the glue on, then put a paper strip. Smooth strip with fingers. Continue on laying down 3 to 4 layers of strips. Let dry for 2 to 3 days.

Paper Mache Paste
1/2 cup flour
2 cups cold water
2 cups boiling water
3 tbsp. sugar
Newspapers
Mix together the flour and cold water in a bowl. Add boiling water to this mixture, and return to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in the sugar. The mixture will thicken as it cools. In humid climates, try powdered non-porous wall paper adhesive mixed with water.


BUBBLES

Beluga Bubbles
1 cup Warm Water
1/4 cup Blue Dishwashing Liquid
1 teaspoon Salt

Combine all ingredients. Mix well until salt dissolves. Allow to sit overnight.

More Bubbles
1/2 cup Water
1/2 cup Liquid Detergent
1 Tablespoon Cooking Oil

Mix together and allow to sit overnight.

Best Bubble Solution
1 c Water
2 Tablespoon Light Karo syrup
OR 2 Tablespoons Glycerin
4 Tablespoon Dishwashing liquid
Mix together and allow to sit overnight.

Best Bubble Wands
Experiment with blowing bubbles using different items.
~Bend the opening of a coat hanger into a large circle
~Green plastic baskets strawberries come in
~Tuna can with both ends cut out (careful of sharp edges)
~Fly swatters with holes
~Covers of yogurt containers with the center cut out
~Make a Straw and String Wand:
~Take two straws and run a length of cotton string through both. Tie and hide the knot inside one of the straws. To make a giant bubble, hold the straws in each hand and draw apart to make a rectangle. Dip in bubble mix and gently stroke through the air.



FINGER PAINT

Kool-Aid Finger Paint
2 cups flour
2 packages un-sweented Kool-aid
1/2 cup salt
3 cups boiling water
3 Tablespoons oil
Mix wet into dry. The kids love the color change.

Jell-O Finger Paint
Any kind of flavored Jell-O
Enough boiling water to make it a good consistency.
Use your normal finger-painting material or glossy paper. Kids love the smell and the feel of it.

Scratch and Sniff Paint
Mix flavored gelatin or Kool-aid package into half the water suggested in the package directions. Paint with the scented mixture and allow to dry. You will have a scratch and sniff painting

Cornstarch Finger paint
3 tablespoons sugar
1/2 cup cornstarch
Medium saucepan
2 cups cold water
Muffin tin or small cups
Food coloring
Soap flakes or liquid dishwashing detergent

Mix sugar and cornstarch in saucepan. Turn heat on low, add cold water, and stir until mixture is thick. Remove from heat. Divide mixture into four or five portions, spooning into muffin tin sections or small cups.
Add a few drops of food coloring and a pinch of soap flakes or a drop of liquid dishwashing detergent to each portion. Stir and let cool before use. Store covered.

Flour Finger paint
1 cup flour
2 tablespoons salt
Saucepan
1 1/2 cups cold water
Wire whisk or eggbeater
1 1/4 cups hot water
Food coloring or tempera paint

Put flour and salt in saucepan. Add cold water and beat with whisk or eggbeater until smooth. Add hot water and boil until mixture is thick. Beat again until smooth. Color as desired with food coloring or powdered tempera paint. Store covered in refrigerator.

Edible Pudding Paint
Instant vanilla pudding
Food coloring

Mix pudding according to directions. Add food coloring for desired color. Use on paper plates.


Crystal Garden

garden rock or chunks of charcoal or coal
6 tablespoons plain salt (NOT iodized)
6 tablespoons liquid bluing
6 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon ammonia
Food coloring (optional)
Combine salt, bluing, water and ammonia. Pour over small pieces of garden rock, chunks of charcoal or coal in a disposable aluminum pie pan (throw away when done). Drip food coloring on top, if desired. Set bowl on a tray or wooden board as crystals grow over the sides of the bowl.
Crystals will begin to grow within a few hours. Crystals will continue to grow if you keep watering it.



NATURAL DYES

Method #1
Place the eggs in a single layer in a pan. Add water until the eggs are covered. Add approximately one teaspoon of vinegar.
Add the natural dye.
Use more dye material for more eggs or for a more intense color.
Bring water to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
If you are pleased with the color, remove the eggs from the liquid.
If you want more intensely colored eggs, temporarily remove the eggs from the liquid. Strain the dye through a coffee filter (unless you want speckled eggs). Cover the eggs with the filtered natural dye and let them remain in the refrigerator overnight.

Method #2
Collect plants, weeds, herbs etc. Chop a quantity of one of these materials and process. Cover it with water and let it stand overnight. Drain off the water the next morning and save it. Add a little more water to the pulp and simmer for 30 minutes. Drain off this water and add to the first water.

Crayoned Easter Eggs
Color on the Easter eggs before placing in the natural dye.Simple Dots, lines shapes swirls...The wax will resist the dye and your picture will show through.
Rubber Band Designs
Wrap elastic bands around hard cooked eggs, then drop them in natural dye. Let stand 15 minutes. Remove eggs, pat dry with paper towel and remove rubber bands. The parts of the egg covered with rubber bands will not be colored. Once the rubber bands are removed, you can drop the egg into a different color dye.
Marbled Eggs
In a mug or jar large enough to contain one egg, place 1 Tablespoon of oil, 1 Tablespoon of vinegar and 1 Tablespoon of natural dye or food coloring. Add enough water to cover egg, stir quickly with a spoon and drop in hard boiled egg. Pull egg out quickly and pat dry with paper towel.
Collage Easter Eggs
Adorn your eggs with miscellaneous craft supplies; using white or craft glue to attach the materials. Items to try: sequins, buttons, glitter, or beads. stickers or even color with markers. Get wild!
Painted Eggs
Use your homemade natural dye and a cotton swab to paint on hard boiled eggs. Let the eggs sit in egg cups until dry.
